Case Study

Traditional Oak Frame Threshing Barn with Heritage Craftsmanship

Location

Shamley Green, Surrey

Project Overview

In 2023, Fallen Oak Frames was approached to design and construct a traditionally styled threshing barn under permitted development allowances. The barn serves as functional storage for agricultural equipment and cars, with future conversion potential.

Design & Construction Journey:

  • Initial Design: The project began with discussions on the barn’s design, which included traditional craftsmanship and joinery. The team used a daisy wheel design tool, drawing inspiration from a nearby existing barn for authenticity.

  • Material Sourcing: The team sourced high-quality French oak from Hewins, using only the best beams for fabrication. The oak framing was meticulously crafted using traditional post-and-beam techniques.

  • Fabrication & Challenges: With 31 cubic metres of oak, the framing process was complex, involving precise measurements and a carefully planned sequence to prevent errors.

  • Assembly: The frame was erected using a 25-tonne crane. Despite a downpour on-site, the team successfully assembled the barn, including pre-assembled trusses, purlins, and rafters, ensuring structural integrity throughout the build.

  • Final Touches: The barn was clad with white-painted sarking board and green oak cladding from English Woodlands Timber. The finishing work, including door design and fabrication, was carefully executed to maintain traditional aesthetics and functionality.

Completion: The project was finished with custom-designed barn doors, reflecting a vision inspired by an existing French design, and completed with great care to ensure both practicality and beauty.
